We're gathering gifts for children around the world through Operation Christmas Child again this year. Boxes will be available at church until we collect them on November 17.

Pastor Joyce Swingle told about how she felt led to share with the check-out clerk why she was making her purchases, and the clerk told how her daughter received an Operation Christmas Child box after their family was effected by Superstorm Sandy. The woman said she didn't realize it was individuals that packed the boxes.

Bless someone where there is a need somewhere in the world close to home or on the other side of the world.

Living the Life: Choices series review

Rich Swingle led a special service, which included a review of our Living the Life: Choices sermon series. What you'll hear was preceded by small groups reviewing and reporting on their favorite passages from "The Sermon on the Mount", the text we've been covering in the series so far: Matthew 5:3-7:12.

Here's the full quote by Randall Flinn, artistic director of Ad Deum Dance Company:
I learned today that in order to live a transformational life that I first must learn to live a sacramental life. So what is sacramental living? It is living in the remembrance and to the honor of a greater Sacrifice, broken, shed and given for me. It is for me to receive from that Living Communion and also to give from its same mystery. This majestic Grace which incarnates itself, even in a vessel of flesh, bids me to sup, to be filled, and to pour out. What sweet communion indeed! (On his Facebook Timeline)

Filming Return to the Hiding Place.
In the sermon, Pastor Randy mentions the book The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom. You can also see the films The Hiding Place, in which Corrie is played by MasterWorks Festival MasterClass instructor Jeannette Clift George and Return to the Hiding Place, an upcoming film Rich and Pastor Joyce Swingle saw at the San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival. The new film focuses on the work Corrie and her teenage friends were doing before they were thrown into the death camp. The film won "Best Feature Film" and the "Audience Choice Award" at the festival. The film is being shown at other festivals, and producers are in talks with distributors.

Treasure in Heaven or Treasure on Earth

Pastor Jim Warren preached on Matthew 6:19-24. Rich Swingle brought the MasterWorks theatre department to the service after they closed Twelve Angry Jurors in an Off-Broadway theatre: MasterWorksFestival.org/NYC. They all sang in the service, led by Robyn Haley. Josh Knox performed excerpts from Freud's Last Session with Rich. The piece shows an imaginary conversation between CS Lewis and Sigmund Freud. After their performance (not included in the recording due to copyright restrictions) Rich talks about how he and Josh performed it the night before for one of Rich's grad school professors who had CS Lewis as his advisor at Oxford. Loving or Hating Your Enemies

Pastor Joyce Swingle continues the Choices Series on the Sermon on the Mount, illuminating Matthew 5:43-48. Pastor Randy Solomon opens with prayer. Pastor Linda Warren prays over Rich and Pastor Joyce Swingle as they prepare to serve at the MasterWorks Festival as director of the theatre program and pastoral care/counseling respectively. Musical interludes by Samhill Road

For information on the MasterWorks Festival Theatre performances visit MasterWorksFestival.org/NYC. The event on July 10 will include comedy improv by the MasterWorks MasterWits, Jeannie Ortega, singing and telling her testimony about performing with Rihanna before finding the Lord, and Broadway performer Stephen Trafton sharing his one-man play on the book of Philippians.

When Joyce and I (Rich) were in Hong Kong we met James Hudson Taylor III, the great-grandson of Hudson Taylor, who made great inroads into sharing the Good News in China. Jamie, as everyone called him, told us about a ceremony the Chinese held at the 60th Anniversary of the liberation of the internment camp in Weihsien, where he and Eric Liddell were imprisoned during World War II. Jamie told us how "Uncle Eric" challenged the students to consider Matthew 5:43-48, the passage in today's sermon: If Jesus says we should love our enemies, shouldn't we love the Japanese? Most of the students were shocked that he would suggest that they love their captors, but a young man named Stephen Metcalf began to pray for the Japanese. In Olympic Hero in China, a documentary I helped create about Eric Liddell, Stephen says about his prayers, "I found that it didn't change the Japanese, but it did change me." He went on to be a missionary to Japan for 40 years. He was asked to speak at the 60th Anniversary ceremony, but his speech had to be cleared by Chinese officials. You can read that speech here.
