Advent 5: The Christmas Song of the Prophets

Pastor Linda Warren takes us through some key prophecies announcing the coming Messiah and how they were fulfilled:
Genesis 12:1-3
Genesis 49:10
Numbers 24:17
Isaiah 9:6-7
Isaiah 11:1-4
Daniel 9:24-26
Luke 1:67-72
Luke 2:1-14
Pastor Linda mentions that there are hundreds of prophecies that were fulfilled by Jesus Christ. Here are more prophecies and how Jesus fulfilled them: Bible Prophecies Fulfilled by Jesus.

Between the Scripture readings and Pastor Linda's teaching, we sing carols that celebrate the fulfillment of those prophecies. In the service we sang to modern adaptations of classic carols, but our CCLI license does not allow for sharing recordings of copyrighted material online, so because the carols were such an integral element of the service, Rich Swingle recorded carols that are in the public domain. If you'd like to sing along, click this link for the lyrics.

Advent 4: The Word Made Flesh Is Hope

Pastor Joyce Swingle preaches on Matthew 1:18-25. Matthew, the despised tax collector, lived a life of shame, and he highlighted the great shame Joseph took upon himself by marrying a woman who was already bearing a child not his own. Pastor Joyce mentioned Views of the Manger, her husband Rich Swingle's play, and two stories it portrays: Joseph's choice of obedience (today's main passage) and Abram nearly walking between the cut animals when God promised to be the Covenant Keeper (Genesis 15). She also told the story of her heart failure in 2005. You can visit the blog the Swingles kept during that frightening season.

Pastor Linda Warren opens the service, and Melanie Solomon reads Luke 1:30-33. Liz J. shares that the Christmas week prayer updates will all come in one email.

Advent 3: The Humility of the Incarnation

In our third Advent message, Pastor Rachel Taylor explores the humility of the incarnation of the Son into the Baby Jesus.  Using Phil. 2: 1-11, she explains how Jesus laid aside his divine prerogatives to lay in the manger in submission to the plan of salvation for mankind.  Hearers are encouraged to submit in similar fashion to the King so that His Kingdom may come and His Will be done.

Operation Christmas Child

This year we'll be gathering our boxes on November 18. Pick your empty boxes at any service between now and then. See the charming video below for instructions on how to pack your box, but don't miss this year's prohibition on toothpaste and candy due to shipping regulations.

In 2014 Pastor Joyce Swingle felt led to share with the check-out clerk why she was making her purchases, and the clerk told how her daughter received a box after their family was effected by Superstorm Sandy. The woman said she didn't realize it was individuals that packed the boxes. We're expecting that many boxes will go to children who were in the path of the devastating hurricanes this season.

Our community gift this year will go toward training The Jesus Film, which has helped to increase our denomination (Church of the Nazarene) exponentially.

Shoe boxes and donations to this community gift will be collected together on November 18th, at our 11 a.m. Worship Service at the Crowne Plaza.

Please bring your packed boxes, rubber bands to secure them and the appropriate labels for each box, along with the mailing fee ($9/box) and any donation to the community gift.  Checks for the community gift should be made out to Westchester Chapel with a note in the memo line for Samaritan's Purse.  Checks for the mailing fee should be made out to Samaritan's Purse, with a note in the memo for Operation Christmas Child.  You can also pay the mailing fees and register your boxes online at www.SamaritansPurse.org, which enables you to track your box.

Please come to service even if you do not have a box to add; there will be plenty of extra boxes to which you can add your craft item and bless as they wend their way to bless the children this Christmas.

Here are some inspirational and instructional videos to help prepare your minds and hearts for this great blessing.

Here's the amazing 100-year-old woman we met through this video in our service...

The Word Guards

Pastor Jim Warren preaches from Ps. 119: 9-16 on "The Word Guards" as part of The Word is Marching On series.   He explains how the Word helps guard our purity by helping us maintain consistency upon the path the Lord sets out for us.  Pastor Jim cites 2 Peter 2:12 and Galatians 5: 16-26 as examples of the wrong path and the Lord's path.  Following the message, Pastor Jim and Pastor Linda Warren lead the congregation in taking the Lord's Supper, using Luke 22: 14-20 as the text.

Drama Evangelist Rich Swingle opens the service and gives the announcements at the close of the service.  Pastor Linda prays over the message and later leads in prayer over the offering.  Rebekah W. explains this year's Operation Christmas Child initiative and Board Member Eva P. explains this year's missionary giving, which will be to the Jesus Film Project.

In a crazy, rocky, wacky world, you can stand on the Word. Pastor Joyce mentions the liberation of Pastor Brunson from a Turkish prison. You can read more about that here: Pastor Andrew Brunson Free! She also mentions the home that withstood Hurricane Michael, and you can see it standing in the midst of desolation below...

Here are the Psalms Pastor Joyce prays over our congregation:
